Keeping Quiet

The poet Pablo Neruda wants us to count up to twelve and keep still for a moment. He wants us to stop all our activities and remain silent. This stillness will help us to understand ourselves and others better. The message of the poem is that silence and introspection can bring peace. In the modern world of rush and noise, we have no time to understand one another. If we keep quiet, we will realise the futility of wars and destruction. The poet does not mean total inactivity but a moment of peaceful reflection so that we can live in harmony with nature and fellow human beings.
